I just read my first Lee Child Book – Killing Floor.
As it’s his debut novel and this is where character of Jack Reacher was introduced, therefore I thought this is perfect book to begin exploring the work of this highly recommended author.
Another reason, this book made it to almost every top-50, top-100 thriller (novels) list, so had to read it someday.
First of all, it did not disappoint.
The characters and events are well illustrated and the story keeps you hooked till the end.
I actually enjoy reading such combination – suspense, crime, thriller, a dash of romance to spice up the story, action Oozing out of pages.
It’s the kind of stuff you watch in typical action movies…very cliché.
The story had an unchallenging flow but it was spread over 522 pages which I feel is a lot of extra ink and papers.
Overall a nice book but I am not blown away…it doesn’t leave a dent in your mental literary library.
I will probably forget the whole story in a week.
I would give it 3/5 overall.
A few glimpses from the book:
“People spend thousands of dollars on stereos. Sometimes tens of thousands. There is a specialist industry right here in the States which builds stereo gear to a standard you wouldn’t believe. Tubed amplifiers which cost more than a house. Speakers taller than me. Cables thicker than a garden hose. Some army guys had that stuff. I’d heard it on bases around the world. Wonderful. But they were wasting their money. Because the best stereo in the world is free. Inside your head. It sounds as good as you want it to. As loud as you want it to be.”
― Lee Child, Killing Floor
“They taught me that inhibitions would kill me. Hit early, hit hard. Kill with the first blow. Get your retaliation in first. Cheat. The gentlemen who behaved decently weren’t there to train anybody. They were already dead.”
― Lee Child, Killing Floor
“People who wear glasses, without them they always look unfocused, vulnerable. Out in the open. A layer removed.”
― Lee Child, Killing Floor
“a wanderer depends on the kindness of strangers. Not for anything specific or material. For morale.”
― Lee Child, Killing Floor
“screaming at myself to listen to what I’d learned through thirteen hard years. The shorter the time, the cooler you’ve got to be. If you’ve only got one shot, you’ve got to make it count. You can’t afford to miss because you screwed up the planning. Or because you ran out of blood sugar and got sick and dizzy in the small hours of the morning. So I forced the eggs down and drank”

Well, I wasn’t blown away either when I first read it. But then we all have different taste in literature. I still find it hard to believe that it’s considered as one of the best suspense thrillers. But the flow of the story is good, that is definitely one positive.

Exactly what i thought. Dont understand why is this considered one of the best thrillers its no way even near to that status.

Maybe plain prose is what’s considered to be great these days. You know.

Then they shouldn’t call it suspence thriller. It was just a thriller.
I found it way too plain and way too typical.

Well, I’ve said it many times, my favorite Franz Kafka quote, the gist of which is, “a good book should be like a slap on your face.” Sadly, not many novels do that anymore. 🙂

I agree.
If suspense doesn’t give you goosebumps and make you heart jump a little it has failed already.
Franz kafka knows his shit. I read metamorphosis it was a kick right in the gut.
A book must have some impact at least.
