Imagine a biographical film set in the late 1950s, that’s a Tim Burton movie and has Amy Adams playing the lead. And then imagine it going totally unnoticed.
Nobody knows about this movie and I know why.
They didn’t market it much
Simple!
So next time, my author friends, when you think your books are not selling its not your writing, its the marketing that pushes the sales.
Now to the movie
It starts with an artist Margaret Keane, running away with her daughter from an as***** husband. And few minutes into the movie she ends up with another a*** husband, Walter Keane.
Classic out of the frying pan into the fire.
But along the way this new one played Christoph Waltz, manipulates her, and starts stealing credit for her paintings.
Now Walter is a conniving salesman. He is the one we need for book sales, btw.
He convinces everyone it was his work.
I’m not going to spoil the rest of the story for you.
But here is something else I want to talk about. To be a woman artist was difficult back in the day, as far as I have read.
I have read about female artists who funded art movements but nobody knows them. So I was able to understand on a deeper level.
l paint expressionist portraits. Margaret Keane (the real artist) painted expressionist portraits.
The first work she pulls out when looking for a job was a pastel portrait. I work with pastels.
My focus has always been eyes.. hers too.
I made them prominently bigger, she did too.
Well, it’s Tim burton movie so big eyes has a 3-way connection going on.
The Christoph Waltz played so well you hate him like he did this to you.
I don’t know if you will like it or not. If you are an art lover you might like it. It’s a subtle women empowerment movie. Feels good know that a woman like that actually existed.
And my biggest takeaway from the movie is that is you let people lie about you for very long, nobody believes you when you start telling the truth.

Thank God!!
It’s so underrated I was doubting my judgment. Thanks a lot for validating.
Yes and the 1950s vibe is so pleasing to the eyes. Loved the color pallete used.
And Margaret Keanes artwork is one of a kind. 🙂

Sounds like an interesting movie, and I’d never heard the story. Were they the ones who created and sold those paint by number pictures. They always had those kids with big eyes, and I painted a lot of them back in the day.

I looked up, Dan Robbins creating paint by number. The husband actually started selling her paintings in prints and greeting cards in Late 1950s so maybe they were available in form of paint by numbers too.
